CLUB HISTORY

The Club

The Western Wolves were a foundation club in the SWAFL and were formed in 2000. The club has played in every Grand Final except 2007, winning premierships in 2000, 2006 and 2008. This makes Wests the most successful club in the SWAFL. In 2009, we will be trying to go back to back!

The Wolves have been affiliated with the Western Suburbs AFL Club in Hampton Street, Ashbury, since the beginning; however have always decided to remain as Wolves rather than change to be Magpies to follow the men's team.

The club colours have also evolved over time. The original maroon and white "heritage" jerseys were inherited from the men's club back in the beginning. This was then changed to black and white with the help of our jumper sponsor, Keith Mason from KRM Car & Truck Repairs, to follow the colours of the men's team. In 2006, the team changed to combine the original maroon with the black and white to be the current colours we play in today.

The Bling

Compass Cup - Every year we play a night match against UNSW Easts, and like to take the Compass Cup from them. There was some concern in 2007 when the trophy did accidentally get lost at the pub after the game, but fortunately turned up some months later in our club house. This is still an unsolved mystery...

Michelle Daley Charity Match - This is a pre-season charity match that we play against Balmain each year. Michelle Daly sustained a severe injury in a game early in SWAFL's history after falling on the ball and since then it is an annual charity fundraiser, with all money raised being donated to the charity of Michelle's choosing. Players and coaches pay $5 to be part of the game, and raffles etc are sold throughout the match. One year we even had a busload of the fundraising recipients along to watch and cheer and enjoy the carnival atmosphere. The match ball was originally presented to the best rookie, as we wanted to encourage the new players to give it a go. Now the match ball is part of the raffle. Other games are also on this day, however the Wolves v Balmain is still the main event. Michelle makes sure she comes down each year to do the toss and presentation af ter the match.
